Family, Food & Fun; Our Favorites

Happy Friday!

What a great week. We’ve enjoyed sharing our hearts with you this week with each of our blogs and also taking a walk down memory lane with our family’s business story. This week just seemed right for a focus on family and this evening, we’ll be sharing about all three of our favorites; Family, Food and Fun (But of course, focusing on Family.).

If you don’t already do this, we highly recommend it; make Friday your Family Fun Night! It doesn’t even have to be a Friday. The important thing is taking time each week to be with your loved ones and sharing some no cell-phones, work, or distractions time. If you can manage to do something together as a family every night, you are making such a huge difference, but the goal is to really focus on each other and designate that time as special.

We love food, or we would be in the seasonings business, so we like to use dinner as our family time. Sometimes we cook, sometimes we go out to eat, but we always make sure it’s a time to focus on each other. We highly recommend it! A close-knit family makes for a great, encouraging environment.

Here are some recommendations on how to incorporate Family, Food and Fun into your week!

  • Make a special recipe together and assign special tasks to each family member.
  • Play a game; bonus points if it involves food (Ever tried playing the alphabet game? Try naming only foods that start with each letter!)
  • Spend time around the dinner table telling jokes.
  • Take time to celebrate the accomplishments of your family by going out to eat together. Have someone make awards and present them during the meal!
  • Have each family member choose a dish for dinner. Then, take all of them shopping, give them a list of ingredients needed for their dish and see who can get them fastest!

We hope you get to spend some quality time with your loved ones this weekend. Give them an extra hug for us!

Happy Friday,

The Seasonest Family

Heart 1Our last bit of advice is how to present your beloved with this special, spicy gift. Here we go! (Please read these aloud in the cheesiest voice possible. It is also crucial that you present the gift in perfect timing with your words. Trust us.)

  • Spicy Blend: “Hey baby. Just wanted to spice things up a bit.”
  • Original Blend: “(Insert name here), I love that you’re so… original.”
  • Soul Food Blend: “Darling, you are food for my soul.”
  • Italian Blend: “You inspired me… your love takes me to faraway places.”

Organic, Vegan, Paleo, Gluten-Free, Non-GMO Lifestyles… We Fit Them All!

Diet and Lifestyle Blog

In the last few years, it seems that food and health awareness has become a big deal! We’re so glad for it as we are all about healthy living and love learning new ways to take care of our bodies. When we started Seasonest, we wanted to use the healthiest ingredients and to encourage ourselves and others to treat their bodies better by watching what we put into them.

Fast forward a few years, and we’re proud to say that we are doing better than ever and that our seasonings can still be enjoyed by diets and foodie lifestyles of all kinds! Do you eat meat? Or, maybe you’re a vegetarian? Vegan? We don’t stop there… paleo, organic, gluten-free, non-GMO… we cover them all. You DON’T have to stop enjoying the delicious flavors, even if you change your diet. Nobody wants to sacrifice flavor, right?

Today, we want to review what each type of diet and lifestyle really means so that you can get a better idea of how we fit into each of them and how you can still get the most enjoyment out of healthy eating with flavorful seasonings.

Vegan: If you’ve never really delved into this lifestyle, you may go through the thought process of, “Okay, so there are those who eat meat… and then there are vegetarians and pescatarians, but what exactly does “vegan” mean?” It’s a term that’s been around since the 1940s and it has become more popular in recent years. Of course, there have been those who lived vegan lifestyles long ago, but the coined term has only been around for a few decades. Veganism is the choice to eat foods that are not derived from animals. This can range all the way from meat and eggs down to honey made from bees. It is both a diet and a philosophy. Some choose it as they are highly concerned with animal treatment and feel that this is a way in which to avoid exploiting them, while others may simply do it for health reasons. There are so many reasons why someone may choose this lifestyle. We are proud to say that our products are safe for the vegan diet and way of life! Learn more about veganism here: Click Me!

Organic: This term refers to foods that do not contain antibiotics, growth hormones, GMOs, synthetic chemicals or fertilizers. When you are eating organic, you are saying no to all of these things and hopefully means that you are making a very conscious choice about the ingredients and foods that go into your body. Read more about what organic means here: Click Me.

Paleo: The Paleo lifestyle is one that chooses to forego refined sugars and grains as well as processed foods. It is based on what caveman would have had access to way back when, such as meat that they could hunt and vegetables that they could forage for. What it means for the modern era is no coffee, corn, alcohol, peanuts, legumes or dairy. It’s a tough one for many to stomach, but it’s definitely given some a healthier outlook on life and many will tell you that they feel so much better after giving it a try. To learn more about the Paleo Diet and where it came from, follow this link: Click Me!

Gluten-Free: With all of the diets and lifestyles listed here, it should be noted that technically, all of them are voluntary and based on personal choice. However, with a gluten-free lifestyle, many will likely choose it based on having a gluten allergy and an attempt to avoid the not-so-pleasant side effects of ingesting the gluten protein. Some people have celiac disease, which is an autoimmune disorder where gluten can damage the small intestine. Others simply have a sensitivity to it, and others may choose to be gluten-free for many other reasons. You don’t have to worry about any allergic reactions due to gluten with our seasonings; your celiac symptoms and sensitivity are safe with us! To learn more about celiac disease and gluten, check out this website: Click Me.

Non-GMO: GMO stands for “Genetically Modified Organism”. What non-GMO means is that something wasn’t artificially modified or manipulated in a lab. For more information on this term and to see what foods do and don’t have a risk for GMOs, check out this link: Click Me.

Whew! With all of that information, we hope that you feel wiser to the ways of different foodie lifestyles and what it really means to have seasonings that fit into such a variety of categories! We’re really happy that people of all different kinds of diet choices are able to share in the fun and flavor of Seasonest.

Thanks for being part of the family.

Recipe: Soulful, Delicious Potato Chips

Happy Friday Everyone!

We’ve got a fun snack recipe just in time for the weekend. This is a great family activity, or something fun that you can do with friends! There are also quite a few ways to make potato chips (baking, frying or microwaving) and we are going to show you how to make them! We used a deep fryer, but you can certainly use the alternate methods listed in the recipe.

photo 1 (4)

Ingredients

  • 4 potatoes
  • 3 tbsp. of sea salt
  • Soul Food or Soul Food Mild Spice Blend
  • 1 quart of your choice of oil

Instruments

  • Deep fryer, microwave, pan or baking sheet/oven
  • Oven mitt (Please use this anytime you plan on frying or handling hot things!)
  • Tongs (if frying- to remove potato chips)
  • Knife, food processor or mandoline
  • Vegetable peeler
  • Potato scrubber
  • Colander
  • 3 large plates or bowls
  • Paper towels

photo 2 (4)

Instructions

  • First, lay out two large bowls or plates and cover them with paper towels (You will need them for later.) Keep extra paper towels close at hand for later use.
  • Then, wash and rinse your potatoes. Make sure to scrub off the dirt, preferably with a potato scrubber.
  • Take a vegetable peeler, or a knife and carefully cut off the potato skins (Some choose to leave them on for extra crispiness.).
  • Slice the potatoes with a knife, food processor or mandoline to the desired width. Rinse the potato slices.
  • Get a large bowl and fill with cold water, adding 3 tbsp. of sea salt. Place the potato slices in the bowl for 30 minutes.
  • After 30 minutes, take the slices out of the water and rinse them in a colander and lay out to dry on one of the plates or bowls with paper towels. Let potato slices dry for about 30 minutes.
  • Begin cooking:
    • If using a deep fryer, take out the frying basket and fill with desired amount of oil (Do not overfill!). Preheat fryer to 350 degrees (It should take about 10-15 minutes to heat up.). *PLEASE NOTE: Only cook a few at a time!
    • If using a pan, fill with at least an inch of oil and slowly turn up the heat. Test the temperature with a wooden spoon; if it’s ready, bubbles will form around the wooden spoon! *PLEASE NOTE: Only cook a few at a time!
    • If you are microwaving, place potato slices apart from one another and cover with a paper towel. Cook on high power for 3 minutes; check on them and photo 3 (4)continue cooking at one minute intervals until they are cooked to your liking.
    • If baking in the oven, place potato slices apart on a gently oiled, buttered or greased baking pan and then oil/butter the potato slices. Cook for 15-20 minutes at 350 degrees, or until golden brown.
  • Cook until golden brown.
  • Take the potato slices and lay them on the second bowl or plate covered in a paper towel to soak up the excess oil.
  • Season with Seasonest’s Soul Food Blend!

We hope you enjoy this recipe. Let us know how your homemade potato chips taste!

Christmas Music on #MotivationMonday

Happy #MotivationMonday Everyone!

Blog Title Christmas 2

It’s beginning to feel more and more like Christmas. It’s a time of hope, joy, peace, love… friends, family, food… all of the good things that bring us together and make the season so bright! We know that this can also be a hard time for some and that being in the Christmas spirit isn’t something that always comes easily to each of us.

Whether it’s worry about jobs, finances, family, health… whatever it may be, know that there’s always someone thinking of you somewhere and that each year gets a little brighter. Find the things that make you smile and laugh! We typically go for all things food-related and love sharing our recipes and stories with you.

We took some inspiration from Christmas songs to bring you some things that may just turn your Christmas season around!

  • Deck the Halls”

“Deck the halls with boughs of holly, Fa la la la la la la la!”

Get into the Christmas spirit by helping your home LOOK like Christmas; use everything from garlands to gingerbread houses. If you really want to get into it, you could put your home on a Christmas home tour! Blog Christmas Tree

* Singing while decorating typically makes your home look better.*

  • “It’s Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas”

“There’s a tree in the Grand Hotel, one in the park as well…”

Head out to your nearest department store, town square or festive friend’s home and check out the spectacular sights. Sometimes a little (or big) tree and some blinking lights does a body some good.

  • “Sleigh Ride”

“There’s a happy feeling nothing in the world can buy,
When they pass around the coffee and the pumpkin pie.”

Blog CoffeeOkay, this one gives you a plethora of options; head to your nearest coffee shop and try all of the delicious seasonal beverages. Or, make sure you head to that friends’ house that can bake like nobody’s business; I’m sure they’d love to share the 15 batches of Christmas cookies they ambitiously over-estimated.

*Please note: It is not advised to try ALL the seasonal beverages in one day unless you already drink five or more cups of coffee daily. Even then, maybe spread it out over a few days…*

  • “Silent Night”

“Sleep in heavenly peace, Sleep in heavenly peace.”

This may have been a line originally intended for a very special baby, but make sure to heed this advice and get plenty of rest! This time of year can get people really run down and a good night’s rest (and perhaps a nap or two) can really keep some sickness (or unintended grumpiness) at bay.

  • “Silver Bells”Blog Bells 2

“Children laughing, people passing, meeting smile after smile…”

Smiles are contagious and they make you feel AMAZING. Try smiling a bit more and see where it takes you. :)

So, with all of this being said…

“Have yourself a merry little Christmas, Let your heart be light, From now on our troubles will be out of sight…” (“Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”)

We hope that any seasonal “scrooginess” or sadness quickly turns to cheerful, rested and joyful celebrating.

Do you have any Christmas time traditions that really make the season special? Let us know (In song, preferably! :D) in the comment section below!

Wishing you a Merry Christmas,

Motivation Monday: Thanksgiving Traditions

Happy Monday Everyone,

It’s a great season for family and friends to gather together around the table and spend quality time with each other. Our family really loves Thanksgiving!

We wake up super early (okay, mom does) and start to prepare for our big meal. It’s not Thanksgiving without watching the parade or some seasonal cartoons while we wait for things to cook. Cori would rather watch football, so sometimes the remote situation can get a bit tricky… we’re still family, so we’re thankful for those moments, too!

It’s always fun when our cousin drives up and spends the holiday with us; gathering family from far and wide and sharing food together really is what makes Thanksgiving so special. We like to share our turkey with our furry family members, too. After we eat, furry and non-furry family members take a collective nap and sleep it all off! If we’re still feeling like there’s enough room in our stomachs (there’s always enough room for dessert), we’ll have something sweet and then head off to a movie together.

We’re really looking forward to another year all together, celebrating all that we’re thankful for and what God has blessed us with in 2015!

If you have family traditions, we’d love to hear about them. Make sure to comment below and share your favorite memories! :)

If you’d like to experience our Thanksgiving flavor, you can order online here.

With thankful hearts,
